Romans 11:17-21
"...and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, do not boast over those branches. If you do, consider this: you do not support the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, "branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in." Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. For if God did not spare the natural branches (the Jews that rejected faith in Him), he will not spare you either."
So refreshing!! This to me says we never have reason to act in pride or arrogance - God did not and will not save the Jews who reject Christ, nor will he save us in light of faithlessness. We don't support Him, he supports us. Paul "grants" us that were were brought into grace by God, and that is something to be thankful for, not prideful of.
I really think this helps simply appreciating the simple things in life and remembering for what single, solitary reason we have breath of life.

Why is it so easy to be prideful, to be self-centered? Is it Satan's perfect weapon against us?
Again and again, when I ask God's forgiveness for something, it always comes back to pride. The trick is shifting our pride from an interest in ourselves to a confidence in God.
I like the tree metaphor because it's another way of expressing that we are the body of Christ, and to be grafted in as part of that tree is to join a much larger cause of which we are only a small (but important!) part.
